Hello,
Welcome to my website. My name is Kimberley Kallio. I am a 2017 graduate of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences program at UBC, and I practise pharmacy in beautiful Castlegar, British Columbia.
Originally I hail from a small town in Ontario called Renfrew. Growing up I worked in my mother’s pharmacy in many different roles before deciding I was having none of my mother’s career choice and heading off to complete a mechanical engineering degree at Queen’s. I told my mom I wanted to “solve problems all day, not count pills”.
After graduating from Queen’s I quickly realized that the study of engineering was very different from being an engineer. I enjoyed solving problems, but I didn’t connect with my computer in quite the same way I connected with people. What’s more, sitting still all day was driving me bonkers! Thus began my journey to the west coast in 2013 to pursue a degree in pharmacy at UBC!
Though it may seem that my engineering degree was a strange path to take on the way to working in a community pharmacy, I couldn’t think of a more suitable foundation for studying healthcare. In engineering we solve problems involving complex systems. What could be more complex than the human body!
